“Human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights…once and for all.”
This was the conclusion of Hillary Clinton’s famous speech at the Forth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. Clinton’s words inspired a generation of women as well as the title of a new documentary by Makers, a video and storytelling platform. The documentary covers the conference, the anxious months leading up to it and the success of the Beijing Platform for Action –a document outlining twelve critical areas for improvement in women’s rights– in the two decades since it was drawn out.
Initially predicted to be bland and uncontroversial, Clinton’s speech instead inspired a room full of world leaders by pinpointing the most pressing issues and violations against women. As a result, her words were reflected in the Beijing Platform for Action and have been echoed around the world since.
